The five member clubs of the Riverland Golf Association send two representatives to the Annual Delegates Meeting usually held early in December. At this meeting the current president and treasurer give reports summarising the year just completed, and the delegates then determine the affiliation fee per club for the ensuing year. An executive committee is elected which comprises one person from each club who act as a 'selection' and 'match' committee for the various events held under the Association's jurisdiction.
The programme includes Opening Days, Interclub Matches and Open Championships held by each member club plus 4 Riverland Championships, Match Play, Men's Foursomes, Mixed Foursomes and Junior. The delegates also fix dates and venues for a series of pennant matches, which give those taking part an opportunity to play the other courses in the area and enjoy match play against members of the other clubs in an atmosphere, (usually!) of friendly rivalry.
Each club has a junior development officer, and the executive committee seeks their advice and recommendations in arranging coaching clinics, and annual Junior Championship, and in most years, a junior pennant programme.
During the early 1920's several small clubs were formed in what was then known as 'The Upper Murray of Sth Australia'. There were two clubs in Renmark, 'Rialto of Renmark' and 'Chaffey', plus Barmera, Berri, Cadell, Kingston-Moorook, Loxton, Morgan, Waikerie and Winkie. Most only had 9 holes with oiled-sand tees and 'greens' (known as scrapes).
The first 'Upper Murray Championship was held in 1925 and was won by Jim Chicas from Barmera, but it was not until early 1930 that the Upper Murray Golf Association was oficially formed. Prior to that, the S.A.G.A. had referred to the clubs in the area as the 'River Murray Group'. The smaller clubs dropped out during the war years, with Winkie lasting until 1969.
In 1970, the member clubs conducted the first Upper Murray Riverland Open Amateur Golf Week. The name 'Upper Murray' was dropped in 1971, at the time of the regions name changing to Riverland. Riverland Golf Week was tremendously successful for many years, and the income generated was a major factor in the establishment of grass greens at Renmark, Berri, Barmera and Loxton between 1970 and 1976, and at Waikerie in the early 1980's.
